Intent — IFEM Doctrine
Intent names the engineering outcome before a preferred technology or architecture quietly becomes the requirement.
Purpose
The purpose is to establish a shared frame: what should become dependable, for whom, under which constraints, and how success will be recognized.
Inputs and responsibilities
Inputs include the problem context, stakeholder needs, operating constraints, risks, and decisions that still require architectural judgment.
Outputs and artifacts
The principal artifact is an intent brief that records the outcome, boundaries, assumptions, unresolved decisions, and measures of acceptance.
Verification and decision gate
Verification asks whether the brief describes an engineering outcome rather than prescribing an implementation prematurely.
Common failure modes
A presumed solution becomes the requirement, or important constraints remain implicit and are rediscovered during implementation.
Execution notes
Intent also creates a boundary around uncertainty. It distinguishes facts from assumptions, records what is deliberately out of scope, and makes unresolved choices visible to the next phase. A useful brief gives architecture enough direction to decompose the work without smuggling a solution into the problem statement. It also gives later verification a traceable reason for each important acceptance condition. The brief should remain open to learning while making the current engineering decision explicit.
